Halloween 2020 looked different for many people. There were porch lights off, like normal, buckets of candy at the end of the walkways and driveways, buckets by doors, some treats in individual baggies with no people in sight and others with people sitting outside. Some people opened doors with face mask…not the Halloween kind…and some without. One house had a chair in the middle of the walkway with a rope barricading off the whole front porch to keep people out and other houses with lights and decorations welcoming you to the door.
It got me thinking about about how divided our country and neighbors are, as if it wasn’t prevalent enough already. I reminded myself to not be quick to judge though. We don’t know what their reality is, what they’re really dealing with. There is so much uncertainty right now — more than ever it seems. The last 9 months have been a roller coaster and it has brought out the worst and the best in people, including me. The fact that it happens to be an election year just threw gas on the fire. Because what happens is the candidates do everything in their power to get us to put our hope in them, to have faith in them. But let me remind you, our hope is not in them, but in Jesus. Who never changes, is always the same and always sovereign. Who, when we are in the middle of the fire, is standing with us. From the beginning to the end He is the one in control — my hope is in Him.
he is our help and our shield.
21 In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
22 May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
even as we put our hope in you.”
