Halloween 2020

November 1, 2020

Halloween 2020 looked different for many people. There were porch lights off, like normal, buckets of candy at the end of the walkways and driveways, buckets by doors, some treats in individual baggies with no people in sight and others with people sitting outside. Some people opened doors with face mask…not the Halloween kind…and some without. One house had a chair in the middle of the walkway with a rope barricading off the whole front porch to keep people out and other houses with lights and decorations welcoming you to the door.

It got me thinking about about how divided our country and neighbors are, as if it wasn’t prevalent enough already. I reminded myself to not be quick to judge though. We don’t know what their reality is, what they’re really dealing with. There is so much uncertainty right now — more than ever it seems. The last 9 months have been a roller coaster and it has brought out the worst and the best in people, including me. The fact that it happens to be an election year just threw gas on the fire. Because what happens is the candidates do everything in their power to get us to put our hope in them, to have faith in them. But let me remind you, our hope is not in them, but in Jesus. Who never changes, is always the same and always sovereign. Who, when we are in the middle of the fire, is standing with us. From the beginning to the end He is the one in control — my hope is in Him.

20 “We wait in hope for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
21 In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
22 May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
even as we put our hope in you.”
— Psalm 33:20-22

Despite unusual circumstances, last night was refreshing. We gathered with friends who we have been doing Halloween with for almost 7 years, got dresses up, made some festive treats…some more successful than others…and had a little normalcy. Maybe it was because for the first time this year, a “tradition” was kept — even if it was as small as successfully getting the kids in costumes for Halloween 2020.

Hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane. This was the twins first Halloween in the NICU. The volunteer’s made pumpkin and candy corn hats and booties for the babies. Bailey was fighting off an infection, so her bear dressed up for her.

At first there were two…

and then there were three…

and then there were five!

That time we still got to trick-or-treat…
Happy Halloween

Hi and welcome! I hope to bring a little joy, humor and connection to you. To remind us all that we are not on this journey alone, that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, that comparison truly is the thief of joy and that faith will always overcome fear!
